Over the weekend, Leek’s very own goalkeeper Hugh Phillips-Bland represented Mercia Lynx under 15’s at the Futures Cup in St Albans following the fantastic form he displayed in the West Midlands performance centre.
On the first day of competition, Mercia Lynx played two games with the first one ending with a 4-0 defeat to Wessex Leopards; however, despite the poor result, Hugh only conceded one of the goals. It was a similar story in the second game as well with Mercia Lynx losing 2-0 against Pennines Pumas in a much better performance with Hugh again only conceding one of the goals.
However, on the second day of competition things looked a lot better for Mercia Lynx who won 4-1 against Celtic Jaguars to secure 5th place overall. This game also saw Hugh keep a clean sheet meaning he had only conceded two goals across the entirety of the tournament.
Throughout the weekend, Hugh showed what a fantastic young goalkeeper he is and I’m sure this won’t be the last we hear from him. Well done Hugh!
