He was born in Cheddleton in 1936 and began to play Hockey at Leek High School (Grammer School in those days). He attended College in Chester from 1954 – 56 and returned to Leek to teach at East Street Primary School. He then gained a position at Horton Lodge eventually becoming a much admired and highly respected Headmaster.
In his younger days he played cricket for Regex as a quickish opening bowler and occasional umpire. Away from sport he was a regular performer with All Saints Operatic Society, The Leekensians and Phoenix Singers.
His Leek Hockey career began in season 1956/57 and he quickly made first team status with his speed and direct approach on the right wing. 20 years later he was a member of the undefeated 3rd XI (1976/77) where he scored 40 goals and as older members will know, could remember every single one. Remarkably he was able to play until he was 67 – a total of 47 years. His energy and enthusiasm were boundless both on and off the pitch, “pass it to me” or as 1st XI supporter “come on Leek”. This approach shone through in his work as a team captain or the various positions he served on club committees. Perhaps his most important role was that of Club Treasurer which he held from 1989 for 15 years. Here he was helped by the banking skills of wife Margaret and the two of them made sure that club finances were kept under strict control.
As President he was a keen and supporter of the Men’s 1st XI, and the other teams, and a welcoming host to visiting teams and officials.
Roger and Margaret moved to Woodstock in 2016 to be near their family and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with Margaret, son Chris and his family Heidi, Scarlett and Zachary at this sad time.
If you would like to donate to charity in Roger’s memory, the family have 2 charities very close to their hearts and would like any donations to be directed here:
