Leek 2nd XI 7 Stratford 2nd XI 1
Leek returned to winning ways when a much improved performance saw them comprehensively beat Stratford in a one-sided encounter at fortress Mountside.
The home side survived a fast start by the visitors and were indebted to the experienced Stuart Brindley and goal keeper Adam Knott to ensure they didn’t fall behind, however, it didn’t take long for Leek to gain control of the match with youngsters Thomas Finney and Harry Mellor once again to the fore. The hard running of forwards Thackstone and Sam Heath created problems for the Warwickshire sides defence and Leek almost capitalised when Josh Woodcock struck the cross bar with a powerful flick.
It wasn’t long before Leek turned the pressure into goals with Thackstone notching a quick double, the second was created by Ash Cunningham having an immediate impact on his return from injury.
Whilst Leek continued to press they were unable to add further goals before the break. Leek re-organised slightly at half-time and the tactical change paid dividends as Stratford were unable to escape their own half and rarely troubled the Leek defence, any sporadic forays were quickly snuffed out by young full-backs Finlay Prince and Charlie Heath both of whom were excellent once again.
Leek’s excellent build up play was regular rewarded with goals as Thackstone added a further two to his personal tally and strike partner Heath added two from close range. Cunningham added the seventh from a well worked short corner. Stratford did manage a consolation as a penalty corner was deflected past the helpless Knott, however, he proved his quality with a good save from a penalty stroke.
