High Five for the ladies 2nd team

Leek 2s 5 - 1 Burton 2s

In the first league game of this year's campaign, the ladies 2s had a much changed and new team from last season. Leek had 3 player debuts at this level and they all fitted in like they had been playing at this standard for years. Leek started off playing some really good hockey and had all of the play in the first few minutes. It wasn't long before they made the most of this possession and Kirsty Mudd finished off a lovely team move to put them 1-0 up. Leek continued and it was youngster Jess Wright who was having a great game on the wing, cut inside and finished coolly into the corner of the goal. Kirsty Mudd then grabbed her 2nd, being well positioned after some great team play. Leek continued to apply the pressure and had numerous chances saved by the keeper, they hit the crossbar too but finally got their 4th goal when Hazel Mycock pushed the ball past the outstretched keeper.
A little against the run of play, Burton pressed the Leek defence and an illegal stop on the goal line resulted in a penalty stroke which the Burton player dispatched well, despite the best diving efforts of Annie Shuttlewood in goal, the ball found its way into the bottom corner.
The 2nd half was a bit more even, Burton finding their way in the game and putting together some passes and pressing the Leek team. Leek made a few mistakes which will hopefully iron out over the next few games and with more match play. Leek still had lots more chances, with a goal disallowed from a good Lydia Murfin strike at a penalty corner that was just too high and quite a few chances just creeping wide or being saved by the keeper. The scoring was finished off with player of the match Kirsty Mudd grabbing her hat trick goal with a surprising lob over the Burton keeper, catching everyone off guard.
The team will continue to build from here with much to learn and develop, the future looks bright.
