Age before beauty

The game saw a surprise return to ‘Badgers Hockey' for Jamie Jones who was able to have a run out as our senior player. A more senior Cannock side played with a core of 6/7 14yr old boys through the team.
During the first half, Cobras made some good probing forward runs, with Ella Gayes & Sam Brookes doing some fab link up work together. The Leek players must have had their weetabix this morning, as they were all playing some amazing hockey and were unlucky not to convert the chances that they created for themselves. Keira Willott in goal made some quality saves, which then enabled the team to play out from the back through our midfield players rather than going for the long ball all the time.
Cobras were really unlucky to go a goal down with Willott producing some good back to back saves but was unable to prevent Cannock from scoring. A fairer reflection of how well our kids played in the first half would have been if they could have levelled the score to take the teams in equal at half time.
Early in the second half, Cannock were awarded a Penalty Corner. Willott once again produced another good save and was backed up by Jasmine Jones clearing on the line, unfortunately despite Leek throwing the proverbial kitchen sink at the attack they were unable to keep the ball out of their net. With Leek trailing by 2:0, they were unlucky to concede another two quick goals despite some amazing saves from both Willott & Jones.
Leek Cobras didn’t deserve to loose the game 4:0 – a 2:0 would have a fairer result. As the team played amazingly in the first half unfortunately the team started to flag due to the age difference in teams, and by the end of the game our players could barely run.
The team had a hard choice to decide man of the match this week between Keira Willott and Jasmine Jones, in the end Keira got it with one more vote. But a special mention must go to Jazz who had already played a game for the Women's 4th team before the Cobras game, despite this she was still able to control the midfield and played one of her best games.
Well played Leek Cobras, can't wait to see you play again next week.
