On Saturday, Leek made the short trip across Staffordshire to mid table side Barton. It is always a scrappy game when Leek play Barton and the 1st 10 minutes of this game was no different. Long ariel balls was all that Barton tried to do. Leek’s defence coped well with these, and it allowed them to play the ball into the midfield where the space was.
Foul after foul came for Barton and finally the umpires got their cards and reduced them to 10 men. However, it was the home side who took the lead. The ball went down their left and a reverse stick cross found their attacker unmarked at the back post. Not the start that Leek wanted.
Leek stepped up after this set back and started to push Barton back into their own defensive 23. The pressure paid off as Leek won a short corner. Kieran Heaths shot was half stopped by their keeper and Joe Priestman was on hand to volley the ball into the empty net from 3 yards out. Clinical!
Leek continued this momentum into the second half. Again, scoring from another short corner. Ben Whites drag flick went straight down the middle and between the keeper’s legs. 2-1 to Leek. The game opened up and Barton started to play higher up the pitch. The ball went through a crowd of players and found the Barton forward who reversed sticked the ball into the net.
Leek were again looked dangerous with Forward Joe Knott turning well and using his skills. The ball came to Rich Cordon who smashed it into the D and Joe Knott got the faintest of touches and into the net. The goal was given by the umpire however for some reason they overturned it and the goal was disallowed.
There was a theme here as this Time Barton had a goal disallowed. Kieran heath failed to clear the ball from the goal line and the Barton forward put the ball in the goal. However, a foul in the build-up was identified and the score remained 2-2.
Barton had short Corners of their own. The 1st one was stopped well on the Line by Rich Cordon however they did manage to score off another one. One which Keeper Adam Knott will not want to think about. With minutes left in the match the ball fell to Paul Dawson who calmly turned and pushed the ball past the advancing keeper. The game ended 3 v 3. Even though Leek picked up a point it felt like a loss.
